Erykah Badu, “By Way of Dallas”
Erykah was curating an art show. She made a film where she brutalized a bike, ran over it, and it was something like “All Bikes Matter.” During the show, different artists painted bikes, and I noticed they all had jackets that said “By Way Of Dallas.” That seemed to be an interesting movement to me: all these artists doing their thing elsewhere had that hometown thing in common. Like, Badu tours and does her thing, but she still has that hometown pride. When I saw all these artists wearing the same jacket, it caught my eye. To have Erykah looking back at me felt pretty special. You can feel [her aura]. It’s difficult to escape it.
