Although Hot 97 is widely regarded as the leading hip-hop radio station in New York, it wasn’t without its sometimes-forgotten precursors. In the early ’80s, WBLS and Kiss FM were the go-to stations for your dose of hip-hop music. WBLS introduced “Rap Attack,” hosted by Mr. Magic and Marley Marl, while Kiss FM added DJ Red Alert to their register. Only in 1993 was Hot 97 broadcast across the airwaves, becoming “where hip-hop lives” ever since.
