Check the Label: North Hill’s High End, Futuristic Designs
Montmartre, located in Paris's 18th arrondissement, has been a hub for artists for the last 200 years. "Van Gogh and Picasso have lived there and been inspired by it", says Michael Friggit, one of the founders of local high-end streetwear label North Hill.
He and his fellow North Hill founders, Christophe Van Waetermeulen, and Zihad Dubois, met a few years back as teenagers. They're all 21 now and impressively, North Hill is not their first fashion label. After creating and running Feel Good, a more casual brand, they wanted their next project to be high-end and futuristic with an emphasis on art.
"We wanted to do classic pieces of menswear with very elegant cuts and different juxtapositions," Friggit says. One of the brand's signature looks is that of mixed materials, a subtle technique that really elevates North Hill's aesthetic. "We really try to make our collections look new but simple. We believe something classy is something simple."
North Hill has also managed to differentiate themselves from other labels by infusing art into every aspect of the brand. Their ongoing video series "Art Is" has a simple premise: "We interview artists we like and they explain their artistic vision," Friggit says. So far they've featured everyone from New York rap duo Doppelgangaz to Brussels-based paint artist CASH.
As for what North Hill's got in the pipeline, they're looking forward to collaborating with L.A.-based group of producers, Soulection. As to what exactly this collaboration might entail - they're staying mum on that for the moment. But like their streetwear collections we're sure it will be nothing less than artful and intriguing.
