15. Youth of Today
Minor Threat might be the first band you think of when the term “straight edge” comes up, but Youth of Today created the straight edge brand. Coming in a wave shortly after the dissolution of early straight edge bands, including Minor Threat, SS Decontrol, and DYS, Youth of Today took the idea further, touring the U.S. and Europe several times using the powerful X’ed up fist as their symbol. They weren’t the first, and won’t be the last, but they created the traditional template for straight edge hardcore with the fist as a timeless image.
